Central Jersey Diaper Bank - Baby Formula, Equipment & Diapers: a project of the AECDC, Inc

AECDC provides free Baby Formula, Equipment and Diapers, plus wipes, clothing and other items that are crucial to keeping babies and young children healthy and growing! AECDC is the only diaper bank in Central NJ, and is affiliated with the National Diaper Bank Network.

Safety-net programs such as Food Stamps or WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, lnfants, and Children) do not cover the cost of diapers, and can only provide whatever brand and type of formula is currently available.

In response to great need among young, low-income families in our community, in July, 2010 we began a program to distribute one week’s worth of diapers, wipes, and/or formula for each young child in the families referred to us.  Families come to us from other social services who can verify their need.

In poor and low-income families, a baby can spend a day or longer in one diaper.  Recent research has shown that babies in physical distress cry more, and are more likely to be abused by parents who already are stressed.

Most  licensed day care centers do not accept cloth diapers and require parents to provide a steady supply of disposable diapers.  Without these, parents cannot access daycare and are less able to attend school or work on a regular basis.  This leads to increased economic instability and a continuation of the cycle of poverty.

Lack of formula, or of that best-suited to an individual child, leads to hunger and malnutrition.  Sometimes parents "water down" short supplies; at other times babies suffer from skin, respiratory or bowel symptoms because the available formula is not right for them.

In the 2015-2016 year we provided over 65,000 diapers to 527 families and formula to 70 families.  We were able to meet 95% of requests for diapers, but because of limited funding, only 80% of requests for formula.
