Bergen Reads: Reading with Enjoyment Assurance Dedication and Success

Bergen Reads is designed to assist students who would most benefit from personal, one-on-one time for one half hour each week. It is ideal for students who need help in reading fluency, comprehension, or students who are shy or withdrawn, or who are not read to at home, or need to improve their English. Our volunteer Reading Buddies spend part of each weekly session reading to their assigned students (one- on-one for one half hour per student) and part of the session being read to by the students.

Each volunteer works with at least 2 students (30 minutes per student, for a one hour time slot) at a weekly session that works with your scheduling, from October through early June. The program takes place in Teaneck and Hackensack elementary schools.

Teachers are requested to send each student out to work with his/her Reading Buddy prepared with appropriate books. Flash cards and other tools may supplement the session. The success of this effort is enhanced when there is good communication between the volunteer and the teacher. Volunteers have been asked to communicate with you through email, as they know that your time in the classroom should not be interrupted.

Please not that due to Covid-19 restrictions we are not currently accepting NEW volunteers for this program, however if you want to get added to a waitlist please email us.

Eligibility Must be available to read during the school day.
