This course addresses the inequities and misrepresentation of Black males in media and society today. It highlights the unique issues that Black males face and endure. Participants will explore cultural mistrust, how this influences their perceptions, and the quality of relationships.
Each Black male has distinct needs; therefore, it is essential to identify relevant means to engage and support each. Participants will examine how efforts to adequately provide for Black males can be linked to the fight for larger social justice goals for individuals and their communities.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the impact of systemic oppression and implicit bias on Black males
- Discuss how cultural responses toward mental health influence counseling with Black males
- Apply culturally specific skills that foster a healthy identity when supporting Black males
- Evaluate how their own values and experiences with Black males contribute to service delivery
