Hum Kids Toothbrush Research Study for Kids with Autism

What will my child and I be asked to do?

If you and your child are eligible to participate in the study, you will be asked to attend two study visits.

During the first visit, your child will complete an oral exam and we will conduct an interview and questionnaire with the caregiver and determine eligibility. If eligible, your child will be asked to use the hum kids toothbrush twice a day for four weeks under your supervision. You, the caregiver, may be asked to respond to text message questions about the brushing experience.

After one week, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire remotely.

During the second visit, we will conduct an interview and questionnaire asking you about the overall experience of using the hum kids toothbrush with your child and your child will complete an oral exam.

What is the study about?

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the experience of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 or 2 with using the Colgate hum Kids toothbrush. This toothbrush connects to an interactive game on your phone or tablet, which guides your child’s brushing. In this study, we will document you and your child’s experience of using the hum Kids toothbrush.

How do I know if my child is eligible?

To be in this study, your child must be 5-12 years old, diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Level 1 or 2, in good general health, and good oral health. Access to an Apple iPhone (newer than 8th generation), iPad (newer than 5th generation), or Android (running Android 6.0 and up) with access to Internet is also required. A study investigator may conduct a phone screening to see whether you and your child appear to meet the criteria to be eligible. Final determination of eligibility is determined when attending the first study visit.

What are the potential risks?

The risks of using the hum Kids toothbrush are expected to be the same as those for any toothbrushes available commercially. Proper supervision during brushing will be needed.

What are the potential benefits?

The hum Kids toothbrush and app may be a fun and engaging addition to your child’s brushing routine. Using the app, you and your child can track brushing progress and time when to stop. Participation in this study does not replace the need for your child to visit the dentist on a regular basis.

Will I have to pay for anything?

There is no cost to you or your child for this study. The toothbrushes will be provided.

Will my child and I be paid for being in this study?

Eligible participants will receive $200 for the first visit and $240 for the second visit ($440 in total for completing all study visits). If you and your child attend the first visit but are not eligible, you will be compensated $100.
