Staying SAFE: A Clinician's Guide

Your safety is as important as the work you do. Whether working in an office or the community, there are inherent dangers. This course offers practical tips to raise awareness about risk factors, behaviors (your own or client's) and alternatives to decrease risk. Course will emphasize the critical need for incident debriefing.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize that risk factors for violence may include individuals decompensating from mental health issues, substance use disorders or a history of trauma
- Recognize how self-awareness (provider posture, tone, gestures, etc.) can aid in risk reduction
Presenter: Ana Guerra, LCSW, LPC, LCADC, CCS
Ms. Guerra, is a seasoned mental health professional with substantial experience in mental health and substance use disorders. She specializes in the treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma. Ms. Guerra parlayed her extensive clinical background into a career in higher education serving as an adjunct member for various colleges and universities in NJ for the past 12 years. She proposed, developed and teaches the Substance Use Disorder courses offered at Kean University’s Social Work Department. Ms. Guerra teaches across the curriculum for Associates through Master level courses in Social Work, Sociology & Addiction Studies. Popular courses include “Trauma”, “Clinical Practice” and “Psychopathology”. Ms. Guerra is approved by the Certification Board of NJ to teach initial and re-certification L/CADC courses. She is a trainer for New Jersey Prevention Network. Ms. Guerra facilitates training and consultation for various mental health, substance use and academic settings. She also maintains a private practice which keeps her abreast of clinical issues. In 2019, Ms. Guerra was selected by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to participate in the development of CSWE’s Substance Use Curricular Guide.
