This course will focus on providing a basic overview of the theory and treatment components of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). It will give attendees the tools needed to identify clients who will benefit most from this intensive treatment and teach the basics of DBT conceptualization and treatment. This workshop provides a brief overview of DBT. The workshop will begin with an experiential mindfulness exercise before shifting to a didactic focus on the core components of DBT. It will cover the four stages of treatment, the modes of DBT as well as an introduction to the DBT assumptions and dialectical dilemmas. The workshop will end with an introduction to the group skills training modules. This will serve as a brief overview of DBT and is not intended to be an in depth overview of the treatment. Attendees will learn about how DBT was developed and the evidence supporting DBT treatment. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of the theory underlying DBT, the treatment hierarchy, and the necessary components of a complete DBT program. The DBT facilitator will guide attendees through the key elements of the DBT skill-based treatment modules. Using a blend of experiential lessons, research-based information and detailed case studies, this course will help utilize the basic principles and treatment components of DBT.
