Request for Proposal - Kids' Oral Health Program

The Kids’ Oral Health Program (KOHP) is a $500,000, two-year initiative created by The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey (Foundation) to improve oral health-related awareness, education, prevention and treatment for young people and to advance best practices and professional development for the field. Approximately 10 two-year grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded.

Focus Areas:

This is the second phase of the KOHP, which is informed by in-depth research into the challenges and opportunities pertaining to oral health, including input from community stakeholders. The KOHP Phase II seeks programs that are measurable and scalable for the future.
Specifically, the KOHP focuses on addressing the prevalence of preventable and treatable conditions of the teeth and gums (e.g., cavities, infections, injury) among New Jersey youth (ages 0 to18 years) and will fund the following types of projects:

  •  Education and awareness – Providing school- and community-based education to increase children’s oral health literacy, practice and technique; facilitating parental engagement efforts including expectant and new parents; and ensuring understanding of the link between oral pain and opioid misuse.
  • Prevention – Providing screenings, cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments for under-served populations; linking to pediatric dental homes.
  • Treatment – Providing oral health treatments such as examinations, emergency care and other interventions.
  •  Professional development – Enhancing cross-disciplinary collaboration between pediatrics and dentistry; providing education to prevent over-prescription of opioids, promoting pain relief alternatives and recognizing signs of opioid misuse.

Projects may address one or more of the above-listed activities. Proposals that address social determinants of oral health will be given special consideration. The Foundation is also particularly interested in projects that feature the use of mobile technology and other innovations.
