The Fort Lee Youth Council's Clima-Con

The Youth Council of Fort Lee (YCFL) is an organization that consists of youth (incoming 9th graders and high school students residing in Fort Lee) whose goal is focused on spurring a positive change in our community. The Youth Council of Fort Lee is a NJ registered non-profit organization. The members of YCFL are learning to be role models in order to have a positive impact as engaged and deeply committed volunteers.
YCFL discusses local, national, and global issues and suggests ways to effect positive change by organizing and participating in community activities. YCFL is currently focused on bringing awareness to a pressing issue that impacts us all: global warming/climate change. Our plan is to raise awareness by organizing and holding a global warming/climate change awareness event. Many people are unaware of, or apathetic to, environmental issues. Too many young adults remain uninformed of the negative consequences that global warming brings. Thus, to enlighten and educate people, YCFL, Borough of Fort Lee, and the FL Environmental Committee with Sustainable Jersey will host a global warming/climate change awareness event at the Fort Lee Community Center on Saturday, April 14, 2018, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The event will host guest speakers who are knowledgeable on the subject to present at the event. To engage our younger attendees, YCFL will have games that center on climate change, in addition to live music, food trucks and vendors.
Additionally, YCFL is planning to hold an art contest on how society can help to mitigate the effects of global warming. The contest will be open to Fort Lee residents who are of school age, ranging from elementary to high school. YCFL also plans to implement a recycling bin program throughout Fort Lee with the funds that are raised. The YCFL believes that this event will be a great success. In addition to bringing awareness to the crisis of global warming/climate change, the event will bring our community together in a way that will allow us to enjoy each other’s company, learn something, and effect a lasting change. Too many remain unaware of what the world faces if we do not act now. Global warming is real and a threat to us all. Therefore, the Youth Council of Fort Lee feels compelled to host this event. With the active participation of community members of all ages, the event will celebrate our planet and serve as an important reminder that we only have one. To ensure our survival, we have to take care of it.
